Tan Xu Teng — known to his students as Coach XT — began his tennis coaching journey in 2001. At that time, he was an undergraduate at the Law Faculty NUS. There, he saw that Singapore needed top-level tennis coaches to raise coaching standards and elevate the national game.

Consequently, he set his sights on attracting elite players with proven regional success. In 2007, he founded Tennis Allegiance Group (TAG) International to make that vision a reality.

Professional Tennis Career & ITF World Rankings

Overall, Coach XT is a highly accomplished professional tennis player and coach with a distinguished career. Indeed, he is widely regarded as one of Singapore’s top male tennis players. Notably, Coach XT has represented Singapore many times, winning an individual Bronze Medal at the ASEAN University Games in 2004.

Moreover, he reached a career-high ITF Men’s 35+ Tour world ranking of #56. He was also Singapore’s ranked #1 Men’s Doubles player in August 2018, Singapore Open Champion in 2019, and Men’s 35+ Pesta Sukan Champion. As a result of these achievements, Coach XT was appointed Senior Coach of the ActiveSG Tennis Academy and coach of Singapore’s Men’s National Team in 2018.

Coach XT’s Tennis Playing Style and Career

Coach XT plays right-handed and is known as one of Singapore’s best tennis tacticians. Specifically, he uses a single-handed backhand — capable of heavy topspin or a sharp slice. His all-court counter-punching style exploits opponents’ weaknesses. Furthermore, he applies constant pressure with his willingness to attack the net at any opportunity.

His singles game is built on superior fitness, movement, and court coverage. Between 2017 and 2018, he competed on the ITF Men’s Singles 35+ Seniors Tour in Hong Kong, China, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In fact, he posted strong results throughout the tour and consequently rose to a world ranking of #56 — the highest ever achieved by a Singaporean.

In 2013, Coach XT identified a gap in Singapore’s tennis infrastructure. Specifically, changing weather conditions were disrupting outdoor play. At the time, indoor courts existed only at the Singapore Island Country Club, Keppel Club, and the Four Seasons Hotel.

Therefore, working with Singapore state agencies, Coach XT built 4 premium indoor tennis courts at Alexandra Park — now known as Winchester Tennis Arena. Initially, critics doubted the project’s scale and ambition. However, a decade on, it has proven them wrong. Today, Winchester Tennis Arena is home to the prestigious TAG International Tennis Academy and several tennis clubs, including Paul Wong’s Sunday Tennis, TB Cougars, TNT Tennis Club, and the Law Society of Singapore.

Venue Management

Presently, TAG manages facilities such as Winchester Tennis Arena, TAG @ One-North, Novotel@Stevens and Chinese Swimming Club, with venue rental arrangements in several other venues such as Tanah Merah Country Club and a number of International Schools in Singapore. Past venues under TAG management include SAFRA Mount FaberSAFRA YishunSAFRA TampinesHomeTeamNS JOMS BalestierSerangoon Gardens Country Club, and Warren Golf and Country Club.

TAG International Tennis Academy established itself in the Singapore tennis market as a premium coaching hub. Furthermore, all coaches have had extensive competitive success. Each coach brings the experience needed to develop top-level competitive players. As a result, clients can always find a high-quality hitting and sparring session.

Within a few years, TAG became the undisputed centre for Singapore’s top junior talent. Consequently, every coach developed a cohort of high-performance players. The academy earned the tagline: “At TAG International, Where Champions Learn to Play.”

TAG Tennis Academy’s Coaching Philosophy

As owner and head coach of TAG International Tennis Academy, Coach XT leads the teaching team. In addition, he is supported by elite coaches from across the region — all ex-professionals and fully certified.

Tennis Lessons for All Levels at TAG Tennis

TAG International offers tennis lessons for all ages and skill levels. Specifically, this includes beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. Above all, coaches focus on the three most important aspects of tennis: technique, strategy, and movement.

Training involves drills, fitness conditioning, and match practice. For example, students learn all the key strokes: forehand, backhand, serve, and volley. This prepares them for both singles and doubles play. Moreover, match play sessions teach rules, etiquette, score-keeping, and sportsmanship.

For those with competitive goals, coaches provide tournament preparation and mental toughness training. Additionally, coaches lead warm-up and cool-down routines to reduce injury risk. Furthermore, player evaluation and feedback are provided after every lesson to track progress.

Private and Group Tennis Lessons at TAG Tennis

TAG Tennis offers flexible private lessons for both juniors and adults. Therefore, students can choose their preferred location and time. One-to-one sessions ensure focused attention and fast improvement.

Group junior lessons are available for all standards. These help younger players develop a love of the sport while learning the basics. Meanwhile, competitive juniors can practise against players of similar ability to sharpen their game.

Once students complete a trial lesson and confirm a time slot, they can purchase lesson packages. Subsequently, packages offer reduced per-session pricing and are part of a loyalty programme.
