5 Tactical Drills I Run at Winchester to Improve Your Match IQ

Most players practice to hit the ball better. My players practice to think better — and there’s a significant difference. At Winchester Tennis Arena, I’ve developed a set of five tennis tactical drills that I use repeatedly with private students and group squads.

Each drill directly replicates pressure situations in real matches. These aren’t generic feeding drills. Instead, each one is built around a tactical objective: how to construct a point, how to neutralise a dangerous opponent, and how to make the right decision under fatigue. Run these consistently at Winchester, and your match IQ will compound week over week.

Drill 1: The Crosscourt Grinder — Building Rally Patience

This drill is the foundation of tactical baseline play. Two players hit crosscourt only, with the objective of maintaining depth and neutrality. The rule: you cannot attack until you receive a ball above the net tape height.

This trains players to read the right moment to transition from defence to attack. That skill separates competitive players from casual ones. Furthermore, Winchester’s full-length courts make this drill especially effective.

Drill 2: The DTL Redirect — Creating Angles Under Pressure

I feed wide balls to the forehand and require the player to redirect down the line with pace and depth. The catch: they must immediately recover to the centre after each shot.

This replicates one of the most common patterns in competitive matches — being pulled wide and needing to redirect without losing court position. It’s technically demanding and tactically rich. Players who master this drill consistently win more short points.

Drill 3: The Serve-Plus-One Pattern — Controlling the Point from the First Shot

Every point in tennis starts with a serve. Most competitive points are decided within the first three shots. Therefore, this drill focuses specifically on the serve and the first groundstroke after it — the “plus one.”

Players serve, read the return, and execute a predetermined pattern. For example: serve wide, then attack the open court. We run this repeatedly until the pattern becomes instinctive. Winchester’s court space allows us to work with live ball returns, adding real match pressure to every repetition.

Drill 4: The High Ball Approach — Converting Offensive Opportunities

Too many players hit soft, short approaches when they get a high ball in the midcourt. This drill changes that. I feed medium-pace balls to the service line, and the player must approach with intent — heavy topspin to a corner or a flat penetrating shot — then close the net for a volley finish.

The drill builds the instinct to attack rather than safely push the ball back. At Winchester, I run this in competitive sets against live opponents to add decision-making pressure.

Drill 5: The Tiebreak Simulation — Performing Under Maximum Pressure

This is the most important drill in the set. We simulate tiebreaks with full pressure conditions — tracking scores, applying consequences, and debriefing every critical point decision afterward.

The focus isn’t on technical execution. Instead, it’s on the tactical choices made under stress. What shot did you choose at 6-6? Did you serve to your opponent’s weakness or yours? This is where match IQ is genuinely developed — a core philosophy at TAG International Tennis Academy. Winchester’s competitive atmosphere adds authenticity to every simulated tiebreak, much like the structured group lessons at Sanwa X.
